IDS 493: Electronic Portfolio Project

Introduction

I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my time in the Cybersecurity program at Old Dominion University (ODU), developing a robust foundation that I can build on as I move forward in my career. Courses such as Windows System Management and Security and Networking and Security sharpened my ability to design secure networks and mitigate vulnerabilities. Meanwhile, Cybersecurity Strategy and Policy broadened my understanding of strategic risk management. The most valuable skills I gained include technical problem-solving, policy development, and the ability to analyze complex systems from a holistic perspective—all of which are critical in the cybersecurity industry.

Program Reflection

Challenges and Solutions

One of the most significant challenges I faced during my time at ODU was mastering network infrastructure design in IT 315: Networking and Security. The final project required me to design a realistic network for a high school, including calculating cabling, selecting equipment, and optimizing placement for performance and cost. Breaking the project into smaller tasks and relying on technical research helped me overcome this challenge. This experience deepened my understanding of how technical details and strategic planning intersect, representing a real-world application of cybersecurity principles.

Interdisciplinary Connections

The Cybersecurity program at ODU emphasized the integration of technical and strategic concepts, offering opportunities to connect knowledge across disciplines. For example, Cyber Law provided insights into legal frameworks that complemented the technical skills I developed in Digital Forensics. This interdisciplinary approach allowed me to understand the broader implications of cybersecurity practices, such as ensuring compliance with legal standards while implementing secure systems—an essential aspect of my current work in supply chain risk management.

IDS 493 Specific Reflection

IDS 493 focuses on creating a professional electronic portfolio that showcases the knowledge, skills, and growth achieved throughout the cybersecurity program. The course emphasized reflective thinking, effective communication, and professional presentation, helping me articulate my academic journey and career readiness. While some may not immediately see the need for a comprehensive portfolio, I’ve already found it invaluable in showcasing my skills and networking effectively.

A key skill I honed in IDS 493 was reflective writing. Building pages like my SAIC internship page required me to evaluate previous projects and articulate their significance effectively. This skill was crucial in tying together various aspects of my academic and professional journey, ensuring my portfolio presented a cohesive and compelling narrative.
